Abstract:

BACKGROUND:MANY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PRACTICE UNHEALTHFUL LIFESTYLES, PLACING THEM AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING SERIOUS PROBLEMS. UNHEALTHY DIETARY BEHAVIOR IS ONE OF SIX TOP HEALTH RISK BEHAVIOR IDENTIFIED IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. THIS STUDY WAS TO EXAMINE EATING HABITS OF YOUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.MATERIALS AND METHODS:THIS CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY INCLUDED 225 PARTICIPANTS THAT WHO WERE UNIVERSITY OF MOHAGHEGH ARDABILI STUDENTS AGED 18-24 YEARS. A SELF ADMINISTERED QUESTIONNAIRE WAS USED TO OBTAIN DATA ABOUT CONSUMPTION FREQUENCY OF SOME FOOD AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS.RESULTS:THE MEAN OF AGE AND BODY MASS INDEX WERE 21.31±3.23 YEARS AND 22.73±3.66 KG/M² RESPECTIVELY. 68.9% OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS REPORTED HAVING BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER EVERY DAY. DAILY MILK OR YOGHURT INTAKE WAS 12.5%. ALSO 39.5% OF PARTICIPANTS REPORTED CONSUMING LESS THAN 200 GRAM VEGETABLE AND FRUIT EVERY DAY. 59% HAD CONSUMPTION OF BISCUITS, CAKES, CHOCOLATES AND SIMILAR 2 OR MORE TIMES WEEKLY AND 50.3% HAD POTATO CHIPS CONSUMPTION AT LEAST ONCE WEEKLY.CONCLUSION:MOST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CONSUME A DIET THAT IS LACKING IN FRUITS, VEGETABLE AND DAIRY PRODUCTS. BECAUSE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HEALTHY EATING BEHAVIOR CAN HAVE A LONG LASTING IMPACT ON THESTUDENTS’ HEALTH AND THE HEALTH THEIR FUTURE FAMILIES, THEREFORE NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION AND INTERVENTION IN THIS YOUNG POPULATION SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO PROMOTE HEALTHIER DIET.

Abstract:

Background: Pollakiuria is a lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) characterized by frequent daytime urination in children without an identifiable cause. Objectives: The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the relationship between EATING HABITS and the incidence of pollakiuria in children. Methods: The demographic features of 64 children aged 5 - 7 years affected with pollakiuria were gathered using a questionnaire and compared with the data of 64 healthy controls. Dietary data of children were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Logistic regression was employed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of pollakiuria related to the frequency of consumption of meat, dairy products, vegetables, caffeine, and salt. Results: There were no differences between the two groups in terms of age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). Among various food categories, children with pollakiuria consumed salt (P = 0.003) and caffeine (P < 0.001) more frequently than healthy children. Regarding the relationship between pollakiuria development and the consumption of certain foods, a statistically significant relationship was found only for salt (OR = 1.24; P = 0.002) and caffeine (OR = 1.038; P < 0.001). Conclusions: According to the findings of this study, restricting the use of salt and caffeine may be effective in reducing the risk of pollakiuria in children. It seems necessary to conduct more studies to assess the role of other dietary HABITS, as well as confounding factors such as blood pressure, fluid consumption, exposure to tobacco smoking, and physical activity, in the development of pollakiuria.

Abstract:

Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the effect of EATING habit of children while watching TV on obesity. Methods: The population of this descriptive study consisted of the mothers with children in the age group of three to five years, who referred to five family health centers from June to July 2015. No sampling selection was performed in the study. The study was conducted on 165 mothers, who agreed to participate in the study and their children. The data were collected with the face-toface interview method and using a form including questions related to the socio-demographic characteristics of the mothers and children as well as the condition of children watching TV and their nutritional status. After measuring the weight and height of the children by a digital scale and a standard assessment tool by researchers, their body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Before collection of the data, the approval of the ethics committee, verbal permission from the parents and a formal written permission from the related institution were obtained. Percentage, mean and Chi-square tests were used to assess the data. Results: According to the obtained results, 33. 9% of the children were five years old and 52. 7% were male. According to classification of BMI, 9. 7% of the children were very slim, 12. 7% slim, 58. 8% normal, 8. 5% over-weight and 10. 3% obese. It was determined that 58. 2% of the children ate while watching TV and 34. 4% of those ate their meals once a day while watching TV. Conclusions: It was found that more than half of the children watched TV while EATING. It is suggested that nurses inform the parents about the harms of having their children eat while watching TV as well as obesity.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to explore the nutritional challenges and EATING HABITS of children with Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD) through qualitative analysis. The focus was on identifying specific sensory sensitivities, emotional and behavioral impacts, and effective management strategies to improve nutritional outcomes. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with caregivers of 20 children aged 4-12 years diagnosed with SPD. Participants were recruited from pediatric therapy centers, support groups, and online forums. Data were collected until theoretical saturation was reached. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes and patterns related to EATING behaviors and nutritional challenges. The analysis revealed five main sensory challenges impacting EATING HABITS: texture sensitivity, taste sensitivity, smell sensitivity, visual sensitivity, and temperature sensitivity. Emotional and behavioral impacts included mealtime anxiety, food refusal, and social isolation. Various strategies were employed by parents and professionals to manage these challenges, such as implementing food routines, gradual food exposure, and sensory integration therapy. The study also highlighted nutritional deficiencies and growth concerns associated with restricted diets in children with SPD, as well as success stories where tailored interventions led to improvements in EATING HABITS and overall nutritional status. Children with SPD face significant sensory, emotional, and behavioral challenges that impact their EATING HABITS and nutritional intake. Tailored interventions that address individual sensory profiles and involve a collaborative approach between parents, educators, and healthcare professionals are crucial for managing these challenges effectively. The study underscores the need for ongoing research and practical strategies to support better nutritional outcomes for children with SPD.
